Right now all Audacity developers work on Audacity in their spare time for no pay. The rest of the time, some of us are students, and others work as software developers, musicians, recording engineers, and other jobs.

It took us three years to release Audacity 1.0, which was downloaded well over a million times and was widely regarded as a useful and very promising program.

Less than a year and a half later, we released Audacity 1.2, containing hundreds more features and complete support for professional-quality audio (24-bit and 32-bit samples). It comes with a complete manual and is available in a dozen languages. Beta versions of Audacity leading up to this version (1.1.0 through 1.2.0-pre2) were downloaded over a million times as well.

Imagine how much more we could get done if somebody could work on Audacity full-time! We are looking for sponsors (corporations, foundations, individuals, ...) who love Audacity and would like to pay us to develop it at a faster pace then we're developing now.

Why should I sponsor Audacity?

By sponsoring development of Audacity, you would be able to direct our attention to focus on the features that matter to you most, get immediate individual attention when you find bugs, and gain the satisfaction that you are making hundreds of thousands of users happy by providing them with a free tool to record, edit, and mix their audio.

We are hoping that we can find a sponsor willing to fund at least a half-time developer starting in mid-2004. However, we are also interested in smaller sponsorships: for example, someone could give us just a few thousands dollars to implement one particular feature.

For more information, write to any of the developers, or even better, join the Audacity-Devel mailing list and discuss your ideas with everyone.
